The Science of Etching vs Engraving

Crafting is the perfect blend between science and art, and it's where my love for engineering gets to shine while I get to exercise my artsy muscle too! But those not in the crafty world may be left in the dark on what creates these beautiful creations, and that is what we are here to solve!

Etching vs engraving is a common example of two similar crafting methods that are very different in nature. Although both result in a permanent design imprinted on your glass, the method to get there varies. At the end of the day, engraving is a physical glass scratching process, whereas etching is a chemical scratching process.

What is etching?

Etching is a chemical reaction that happens when a strong etching cream reacts with the surface of a glass. Because we are relying on a chemical reaction between glass and a cream, there are a lot of variables that can impact the final image look. That image tends to come across as a more rustic looking design, but the design is not noticeable to the touch. Etching tends to be a more cost-effective option, knowing that the final etching quality is reliant on a chemical reaction that can only be controlled so much. It includes a crafter cutting and weeding vinyl, adhering it, completing the etching processing with the etching cream, washing the glass, removing the vinyl, then doing a final wash of the glass. However, because it is a risky process, a lot of small business choose not to pursue glass etching, but Crafted By HITCH is proud to offer this to our customers as a price that doesn't break the bank!

What is engraving?

Engraving uses a form of a blade to cut a cavity through the glass surface. That cavity is in the shape of the desired design. Engraving has the ability to be more exact, choosing exactly where that blade is shaving into the glass. Although the final design is noticeable to the touch, the customer is left with a very clear image of the design. Engraving oftentimes a crafter and drilling with a small tool to draw the design onto the glass themselves. Engraving tends to be more expensive in the industry because it the tool spinning at 30,000+ revolutions per minute has the risk of shattering the glass, but when done right, it yields a more consistent product. At this moment, engraving is not something Crafted By HITCH is able to offer today, but we hope to in the future!

Both processes have their pros and cons, but at the end of the day, anything personalized is special. Whether you enjoy the rustic look of glass etching or the sharp lines of the engraving, crafters out there are ready to help make your crafty dreams come true!
